Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya a pioneer of modern Assamese literature was the first Assamese to win the Gyanpith Award, the highest literature award of India. Under the leadership of Late Prof. Bodiuj Jaman of Jorhat the All Assam Chess Association was established.
